Educational Experiences

Whether you are training call centre staff or members of your executive management team the very word ‘training’ doesn’t tend to inspire a great deal of enthusiasm.

But a memorable educational experience can transform understanding – and it can be an experience that is a million miles away from the classroom context of traditional trainers.

What we have learned at Chatswood is that when teaching technical skills, learning by doing is best. Those crucial skills, such as sales company analysis, business process analysis, portfolio construction, or any one of a number of financial skills must be learned and developed, yet they can be awfully boring to teach – and to listen to – in a classroom setting.

Technical skills in our industry are often things that need to be understood but practiced only occasionally. The reality is that this often means that the understanding is limited, the knowledge quickly forgotten. The issue is one of comprehension and retention.

And the answer is to deliver a memorable educational experience. At a relevant location, using demonstrations, on-site research, and participatory exercises a bold imprint of the new information is left – that participants will capture through photographs, experiences, and encounters with the information and skills in a live context.

This new approach which we’ve developed over the last year is one we are keen to share with you – we think it would be excellent to apply it to, say, sales managers explaining product pricing, investment advisers explaining company selection, or managers deploying new performance management techniques with their staff.
