It does happen. In some places it is more open, and in others - less so. This is a useful story about how changes in society, provision, of services, and longevity have taken the provision of dialysis in the United States. Once the preserve of only the rich, it has become much more widely used for many older, sicker, patients. Although the value of treatment near the end of life can be debated the choices it suggests are deeply troubling to anyone who feels empathy. Link.
