Insurance Claims for UK Riots Subrogated to Police

The news that insurance claims from the UK riots will in most cases be subrogated to the Police is more than a tacit acknowledgement that the Police effectively surrendered control of the streets to the rioters.

The claims, around $US300m are not truly massive, but still an avoidable cost. Now add in the human cost in injury and death, plus the terrible cost to Britain's reputation which must affect tourism and perhaps a number of visits to the Olympics, and you still have a very large economic impact.

The risk-avoidance of the Police which have been reported as switching to 'containment' rather than actively protecting people and property; and arresting the perpetrators, has brought widespread criticism.
