United States: Genetic Testing and Life Insurance

In the US health insurers are banned from denying consumers cover based on the results of genetic testing, but the same law does not apply for Life Insurance. Click here to read more. Although there are some significant concerns regarding genetic testing, important differences between the US and New Zealand allow our consumers to be a bit more relaxed about the situation. The first is that the presence of state-funded health services removes one layer of concern. The second is that many 'genetic' disorders are already discovered through the normal application process - by asking the applicant about their family history. The last, is common sense: whatever the attitude of insurers, if you are concerned about your health and want to get a genetic test, then your insurance status should be secondary to concerns about your health.
