Although there are some significant concerns regarding genetic testing, important differences between the US and New Zealand allow our consumers to be a bit more relaxed about the situation. The first is that the presence of state-funded health services removes one layer of concern. The second is that many 'genetic' disorders are already discovered through the normal application process - by asking the applicant about their family history. The last, is common sense: whatever the attitude of insurers, if you are concerned about your health and want to get a genetic test, then your insurance status should be secondary to concerns about your health.
