Sausage Sizzles and Onions

Bunnings Warehouse in Australia has recently added a new safety rule requiring BBQ fundraisers to place the sausage on top of the onions to prevent them failing on the floor and becoming a potential slip hazard.

Many have jumped online to say how ridiculous it is. This article from NZ Herald states that in NZ since January 2013 until now there have been 25 sausage sizzle related claims but a huge 3,001 onion-related claims. So far in 2018 there have been a total of 446 ACC claims for onion-related injury's of which most of them have been laceration or puncture injuries.

It is fascinating that a data-driven approach is identifying useful and creates what looks like a fussy new rule - but is a simple one to avoid a nasty hazard.
